Meditation is now mainstream and we all know the importance of mindfulness and being present. But how often do we put our meditation techniques into practice during everyday activities? Probably not as often as we should. Sometimes we don’t even realise just how much meditation may be able to enhance an experience for us. Massage is a great example of this.

For some, switching off during a massage is a simple thing, but for others it’s difficult to calm the mind enough to fully enjoy the experience. This is when the idea of meditating during a massage comes into play. Often referred to as a mindful massage, it simply means staying present and focused during your treatment. There are many other ways meditation can make your massages even better, we’ve picked our top five.

Five ways meditation can aid a mindful massage

1)  It may improve your pain tolerance
We all know that sometimes a deep tissue massage can seem more like torture than a treatment, but often kneading out knots needs to be firm. Meditating during a massage will allow you to focus on your breath. Breathing into the pain as it takes place may allow you to withstand more, meaning your masseuse can work with your knots for longer and ultimately you’ll end up feeling much better.

2) It can give you an increased feeling of relaxation
Focusing on your breath will stop your brain from being cluttered up with thoughts, bringing you a sense of calm. This means you can lie back and enjoy the experience, falling into a deeper state of relaxation.

3) It can help your muscles to loosen
As your mind quiets your body should also soften. When your muscles loosen and relax your massage therapist should be able to perform a more effective massage as you will be much more malleable. Meditating during a massage can be just as effective as doing yoga stretches before a treatment.

4) It may allow you to feel out your body’s aches and pains
Being mindful during your massage can allow you to focusing on the touch of your masseuse and the way it makes your body feel. By truly listening to your body you’ll be able to identify problem areas much quicker and you’ll probably find with deep relaxation many of the niggles you have been feeling will have already vanished.

5) It may get rid of any massage etiquette anxiety
Instead of worrying about what to say and how to act when you have a massage, meditation gives you a great coping strategy. If you start to feel anxious at the start of a treatment, stay present. Focus on the sensations the treatment gives rather than stressing about if it’s okay to fall asleep or avoid small talk.

Stop obsessing over sleep and free yourself from the old rest rules to get the shut-eye you need…
Poor sleep can mean many things - short, broken, inconsistent or unrefreshing. Either way, it adds up to feeling low, looking drained and generally succumbing to the belief that you’re just not up to meeting the demands of the day ahead.

Maybe you feel exhausted at 4pm but come bedtime, simply can’t drop off? Perhaps you’re asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow, but wake up at 4am and toss and turn for hours? You could even be a classic “Sunday nighter” – someone who generally sleeps well but enters an end-of-weekend state of anxiety and spends all night worrying about the week ahead.

Yet, while most of us are familiar with the over-used phrase “sleep hygiene”, following these guidelines obsessively may merely make you worry more. How many of us lie awake feeling the minutes turn to hours, desperately trying not to check what time it is?
So here’s how to stop stressing and start sleeping…

6 Ways to get better sleep

Give yourself a break:
Many of us have been conditioned to believe that we must get at least 8 hours sleep – but often this is counter-intuitive. We worry if we fall below the mark – we toss and turn and fret so much that we enter a vicious cycle and make sleep even less likely. We know from our different skin types, dietary requirements and body shapes that not all humans are created the same – so it may be that you simply need less than the average 8 hours. Find your sleep sweet spot and feel comfort in the fact that 6 hours of good quality sleep is far more beneficial than quantity.

Find your cycle:
If the amount of time we need is personal, it makes sense that when we sleep varies from individual to individual too. We know that “larks” love to rise early and go to bed earlier – whilst “owls” tend to do both later. Try making your bedtime an hour or two earlier or later than usual every night for two weeks and keep a sleep journal to see how you feel each day. It may just be that your poor sleep pattern is due to bad timing.

6 Ways to get better sleep

Listen up:
Ever since childhood, many of us have been told to count sheep if we can’t sleep. But what you really need is something to distract your mind from the fact you can’t sleep. Skip the TV and laptop (the light will only make you more alert) – and instead, listen to an audiobook. We find children’s books are often just interesting enough to make us follow along – but not so gripping you’ll stay up to hear the end.

Keep cool:
Our bodies require a fall in temperature to help us fall asleep. So if you can’t nod off, stop beating yourself up about it and make sure your bedroom is completely dark and has a window that’s ajar. Then take a warm shower before you get in to your invitingly cool bed.

How wellness shows in your skin because when you’re living well, it shows in a glowing complexion.

1. Hydration
We all know we should drink more water, but dehydration is one of the first things that shows in the face. When the skin is plumped out with hydration, lines and wrinkles are less noticeable. Applying hydrating formulas that contain the likes of Hyaluronic Acid to the face can help but keep your body hydrated from the inside and you really will see the difference in your complexion’s clarity.

2. Sleep
Sleep is your skin’s best friend, as this is when your skin cells detoxify, repair and regenerate. Despite constantly being reminded that 8 hours is the ideal, quality is actually more important than quantity, as the deep sleep cycles are when the body works on restorative processes. So stop stressing about sleep, get a good night’s sleep by your own standards and you’ll see a well rested face in the mirror come morning.

3. Nutrition
Clean eating has taken over our lives in the past few years but making decisions about what to eat shouldn’t be complicated. Enjoy a rainbow of vegetables every day and organic meat when you can afford it and your complexion will thank you. Invite friends to a simple but delicious home-cooked meal every few months with everyone chipping in a different dish to share cooking inspiration.

7 Ways that Wellness shows in your skin

4. Empathy
Doing good does you good. By helping others, we can improve our sense of self-esteem and self-worth, whilst helping the recipient to feel better, and ultimately making our world a better place to live in. Even the simplest things like smiling at a passer-by, holding a door open for a stranger, or giving up your seat for someone on your commute are good deeds that can make a huge difference to how ourselves and others feel. Being kind and being happy are intrinsically linked, bring happiness to both yourself and the recipient of your good deed. Make a list of good deeds you’d like to do for others. Each day tick off one good deed and you’ll soon realise how easy it is to change your life and someone else’s, and how uplifted this can make you feel.

5. Relaxation
Making time for relaxation is vital – if we don’t make time, it won’t happen. If you enjoy yoga classes or meditation that’s great but try to take time to do nothing in particular and enjoy having no end goal. Or simply do something you do every day but without rushing. Relax every facial muscle and loosen the jaw - no more frown lines or creases.

6. Exercise
Exercise can be as simple as walking for half an hour at lunchtime, or getting off the bus a couple of stops before your destination to complete your journey on foot. Take a different route than usual, breathe deep, and enjoy new sights. If you like challenging yourself, the trend for wild swimming is a great way to reconnect with nature. You’ll be fresh-faced and rosy-cheeked in no time.

7. Breathing
We could have easily grouped breathing with relaxation but we think it’s more important than that. We use the phrase “as natural as breathing” but how many times throughout the day do you find yourself holding your breath or not expanding your lungs fully to take in oxygen? Your skin cells need oxygen to function optimally so take a deep breath and oxygenate those cells.

7 Ways that Wellness shows in your skin

An Innovative Nonsurgical Procedure That Instantly Lifts The Midface and Provides Volume Over Time
Looking for an effective anti-ageing treatment that offers the results of a facelift – without invasive surgery? You’re going to LOVE the Pyramid Facial at our Zen Day Spa Skin Clinic.

Divine Pro
Pioneered in the UK, the Pyramid Facelift offers The Face & Body Workshop clients dermal volumisation, skin tightening and resurfacing, all in one single treatment – in just 30 minutes!
The treatment is suitable for women aged 30+, and it’s effective, safe and the results are long-lasting. Like the multi-dimensional nature of the ancient pyramids, this combination of treatments come together to create an impressive aesthetic result.

How Does The Pyramid Facial Treatment Work?
Utilising the ‘Pollogen Divine Pro’ system, the minimally invasive treatment combines the technologies of VoluDerm, TriFractional RF and TriPollar with DMA (Dynamic Muscle Activation) resulting in dermal volumising, skin resurfacing, skin tightening, skin rejuvenation, facial contouring, and the treatment of scars.
Tri-Fractional radio frequency energy rejuvenates the outer epidermis layer, triggering the body’s natural healing response mechanism. Old and damaged skin cells are removed and the body produces new and healthy skin. Like the multi-dimensional nature of the ancient pyramids, this combination of treatments come together to create an impressive aesthetic result.

Divine Pro
Is The Pyramid Facial Treatment Safe?
In short? Yes. Your therapist at Zen Day Spa will talk you through the entire process during your consultation – but here’s the scientific stuff…VoluDerm provides a safe and effective penetration of the epidermis for controlled heating targeting deep into the dermis. This minimally invasive treatment uses fine micro-needles while applying radio frequency to volumise the deep dermal layer. The micro-needles stimulate the body to naturally produce hyaluronic acid, new collagen and elastin.
TriPollar is the only non-invasive technology to use radio frequency energy to generate heat through resistance in both the dermal and subcutaneous layers of the skin, causing collagen fibres to contract which creates an immediate skin tightening effect. Increased fibroblast activity also results in collagen regeneration for a long-term effect. DMA (Dynamic Muscle Activation) energy stimulates the facial muscles resulting in lifting and toning of the skin. It also accelerates lymphatic drainage, blood and lymph circulation optimising tissue oxygenation and detoxification.

There are many skin care lines and products that are geared toward addressing dry skin. However, some moisturizer products on the market actually contain ingredients that can exacerbate dryness. These ingredients include parabens, phthalates, alcohol and mineral oils, which are included in skin care products to serve as fillers. These fillers are added with the intention of making the product more attractive to the consumer.

The Causes of Dry Skin
PHTHALATES
Phthalates are carrier ingredients for fragrances that are added to products. Studies performed on animals reveal that prenatal exposure, as well as exposure to this ingredient through breast-feeding, has hormonal-altering effects. The fact that many consumers are against using products that are tested on animals alone makes products that contain phthalates an issue. Image Skincare products are not tested on animals.

PARABENS
Parabens are used to preserve and extend the shelf-life of skin care products. The issue with parabens is that they can cause allergic reactions, mimic estrogen, and potentially increase the risk of breast cancer. Natural ingredients such as vitamin E, thyme essential oil, and tea tree oil are also used as preservatives, however, while these ingredients may not carry cancer-causing risk that parabens do, they may cause allergic reactions.
The way to find out if you have allergies to certain ingredients is to have a patch test done by a dermatologist. Another way to cut down on risks associated with parabens is to look for products that contain 25% or less. Image Skincare products are 100% free of parabens.

ALCOHOL AND MINERAL OILS
Alcohol and mineral oils are also widely used in skin care products and have the potential to worsen dry skin conditions. Of course, alcohol can be very drying, but it is used in skin care products as a thinning agent for products that would otherwise be quite thick, such as serums. Again, this goes back to the aesthetics of a product and how well it will sell. Alcohol actually disrupts the skin's natural function of making oils that naturally keep your skin soft and supple. Conversely, mineral oil is an ingredient that just sits on the skin. It has only trace water solubility and requires a strong agent to remove it.

OTHER CAUSES OF DRY SKIN
Dry skin can have many causes, ranging from living in a dry environment, overexposure to sun, using the wrong products and even heredity. Our Vital C Hydrating Intense Moisturizer contains many natural ingredients that can effectively and safely address dry skin. It contains palmitoyl oligopeptide which naturally occurs in our bodies to assist with collagen production. Hyaluronic acid is used in this product to lock in moisture, to fight off dry skin in a short amount of time, giving long-lasting results.

A change in season means a change in skincare. Save your skin from becoming dull and lifeless as the weather cools with our top 5 tips for autumn.
Falling leaves and cosy nights at home, Halloween treats and one eye on winter wellness; autumn can be pretty magical. But while summer skincare focuses on UV protection and lightweight formulations, autumn brings longer nights, drying central heating and a dramatic change in diet; all of which can be a recipe for out of balance skin.
Enter: the autumn skincare routine. A transitional period, this time of year is ideal for taking a close look at your complexion—reversing any summer damage and preparing your complexion for winter. Think skin-tingling exfoliation, luscious layers of moisture and handbag heroes to keep you topped up throughout the day.
Here’s what you need to know.

1. Renew your complexionSummer’s glowing tans and pretty freckles may start to give way to parched, flaky skin at this time of year. Rejuvenate with a daily swipe of Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Pads, formulated to effectively smooth and brighten. Starting to discover oily patches and problem spots? Try a 10-minute boost from Papaya Enzyme Peel, ideal for exfoliating and purifying lacklustre, post-summer skin.
2. Reset the clocks
While an extra hour in the day may sound like good news, a change in clocks can cause upheaval for our circadian rhythms. The knock-on effect? Dark circles, dull skin and dehydration. Discover the science of beauty sleep with the Peptide range, skin-synchronising treatments to illuminate sluggish complexions.
3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
The colder the climate, the less able your skin is to protect itself. Start by switching to a nourishing cleanser like Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm: powerful enough to remove all traces of dirt and grime, gentle enough not to strip your skin like harsh soaps and foams. To finish, layer your favourite cream over a facial oil to really help lock in hydration.
4. Take time for you
Rainy days, darker nights; autumn is just the time to perfect your bath time indulgence. Three capfuls of bath milk in the water while you soak, an all over scrub and an invigorating massage with hydrating oil. As we head towards less sunshine, winter layers and a temptation to let beauty routines slip, your skin will thank you for a little treat.
5. Carry your favourites
Hands and lips are constantly exposed, and far too easily forgotten. Stock your handbag with tubes of buttery hand and nail cream and ultra conditioning lip balm for replenishing, long lasting comfort throughout the day.

What to know about the Collagen Boosting Ingredient?

We hear the word over and over again, but what are peptides? And do we want them in our skin-care products? According to Zen Day Spa Owner Lisa McCrink—and basically every skin-expert on the planet—the answer is a resounding yes.

What are peptides in skin care?
To explain the benefits of peptides, Ms McCrink explains their relationship with our BBF: "Collagen is a protein comprised of long segments of amino acids arranged like a chain," she says. When collagen breaks down—an unfortunate, but very normal byproduct of aging—short segments of amino acids are then formed. "These are the tiny proteins and active molecules known as peptides." Simply put, peptides in skin care are "building blocks for new collagen and elastin,".

What are Peptides

How quickly do we lose collagen?
You might be surprised. After the age of 20, we lose about 1 percent of our collagen production each year, which results in thinner, more fragile skin as we age. To help counteract this, incorporating collagen-boosting ingredients such as peptides in your skin-care routine is a good idea. "Everyone in their twenties should protect their youthful beauty with healthy lifestyle habits and by the age of 30, they should consider adding serums and masks to amplify their collagen,”

Which peptide should I look for?
There are five different types of peptides used as skin-care actives, and all function slightly differently: signaling peptides, carrier peptides, enzyme-inhibiting peptides, neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides and antimicrobial peptides. The most common of these? Matrixyl (palmitoyl- or oligopeptide pentapeptide), a neuropeptide that is often used in serums and creams because of its ability to reduce fine lines.
